Interesting Characters of the North EastIn this edition I have tried to bring to life some of the characters of the North East who have helped to mould our lives and our memories. Invariably some of the more well-known characters have made their way to the pages, Hotspur for instance is well written about already but not so many people know the story of Roger Thornton who is one of his close neighbours high above Northumberland Street. I have tried to bring to life the original "Dirty Dick" the famous chemist on Clayton Street until the 1970s. You can also read behind the story of North Shields Wooden Dolly and how a battle with a pirate initiated this famous landmark. Here too is the inventor of Be-Ro Flour and the inventor of plasticine Much has been written about the famous artist from Haydon Bridge John Martin, but less is generally known about his brothers Jonathan who set fire to York Minster or William Martin who invented and sold for £5 the perpetual motion machine. Few people too know about the tragic killing of their sister. Joseph Swan is well known for his part in the invention of the light bulb but how many know how he fitted in with the bookseller Mawson Swan & Morgan or the chemist Mawson & Proctor. I hope that you enjoy reading these pages and I will welcome feedback David Scholey February 2019
