Integral Methodology is the first in a series of books devoted to Catholic social teaching, Divine Mercy and the Message of Fatima. It provides a new and much needed macro-approach consisting of an integral unity of empirical, philosophical, and theological methods wedded to the grand project of broad-scale social-economic-political renewal in the modern world.Peace and social renewal have become increasingly pervasive topics among world leaders looking for solutions to economic, political, and social problems. Looking ahead, the Catholic Church, speaking through Vatican Council II called for the laity to prepare for and take up the responsibility for broad-scale social renewal:"The laity must take up the renewal of the temporal order as their own special obligation.... Preeminent among the works of this type of apostolate is that of Christian social action which the sacred synod desires to see extended to the whole temporal sphere, including culture""In this regard, "Centers of documentation and study not only in theology but also in anthropology, psychology, sociology, and methodology should be established for all fields of the apostolate" (Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity). This study is necessary so that properly formed laymen and women become "capable of creating a new social, economic and political order" (Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, para 19). If this creative task is to be accomplished competently, the first question that must be dealt with is the question of methodology. The author thus articulates the need for an integral, philosophical, theological, and empirical methodology necessary for political science to make its contribution to social renewal, which is increasingly referred to as a "Civilization of Love", a new civilization flowing from divine love and mercy enhanced by the acquisition of learned competencies. This book, complemented by those in psychology, ethics, and politics (which follow) provides the intellectual tools and insight necessary for those called to learn how to become builders of the new civilization of love.
