Starship Captain Joaquin Lafontaine's life is forfeit: his actions in a war against the genocidal Jaari Star Empire have led to a massive defeat and loss of life. His punishment? Death. Or so it seems. Whisked away in the dead of night, Joaquin is conscripted into a top-secret Mobile Infantry initiative: The Avatar Project. It promises to turn him and his fellow prison conscripts into super soldiers, and to allow them to right their wrongs against the United Planetary Coalition with military service.

However, the project isn't what it appears to be. Joaquin and his new friends will discover the true nature of their physical and mechanical upgrades and understand just how desperate the Coalition is to eek out a victory in a brutal, bloody war that they are losing. Together, the Avatars must work together and fight as one, lest they fall prey to the insidious nature of the project.

Will Joaquin and his friends survive and reclaim their humanity? Or will the project claim their minds, bodies, and souls?
