Book Overview

This is not AI-generated content. Aviation Supplies & Academics has been the industry's trusted source for official FAA publications for more than 85 years. Look for the ASA wings to ensure you are purchasing the latest authentic FAA release.

This handbook FAA-H-8083-15B is current in 2025.

The Instrument Flying Handbook is the FAA's primary pilot resource for instrument flight rules (IFR) covering everything pertinent to operating an aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) or without reference to outside visuals, relying solely on the information gleaned from the cockpit. Readers will find chapters on the national airspace system, the air traffic control system, human factors, aerodynamics, flight instruments, flight maneuvers for IFR operations, navigation, emergency operations, as well as helicopter operations and more.

The material in this manual applies to both conventional steam-gauge analog instrumentation and the glass cockpit electronic flight displays found in advanced aircraft. Information is well organized into separate coverage of the traditional 6-pack and discussions of pictorial tape displays. Advanced systems are covered, including flight management systems, the primary flight display (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD), synthetic vision, and traffic advisory systems. The book also features a synopsis of instrument clearance shorthand, as well as an instrument training lesson guide.

The Instrument Flying Handbook is designed for use by flight instructors, pilots preparing for the Instrument Rating FAA Knowledge and Practical Exams, and instrument-rated pilots looking for a refresher or preparing for an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC). Illustrated throughout with detailed, full-color drawings and photographs; comprehensive glossary and index.

Important note from the publisher:

While AI-generated content can be helpful to identify resources for ongoing study, it is not a reliable resource for learning critical, safety-dependent topics such as aviation. AI content is sterile, often lacks important context, and is at risk of errors. ASA publishes only human-generated content to ensure it is accurate, reliable, comprehensive, and presented in context--so you can become a safe and effective aviator.

Excellent Material,Well Presented

The FAA put together a good book for study and review of IFR material. A true one-stop shop for info.

Instrument Fluing Handbook 2001

One of the best I ever read on this subject. Items clearly explained. Easy reading. Reasonable priced.

Excellent Text

A nice primer to instrument flying. Combine this with the ASA Instrument Rating Test Prep book and you pretty much have a self-contained instrument ground school for around $30.

Well written reference for the instrument pilot

How well this book is written was a pleasant surprise. I've found it easy to read, and pretty helpful with the basics of instrument flying. I've been using this book as a supplement with the Ralph Butcher Instrument Pilot Flight Training Manual and the Jeppesen instrument book. To be honest, this FAA book would stand on it's own as a good theory book and looks to have most of the info necessary to pass the written.Combined with the price, it's an excellent edition to your flight library.Safe flying!Tom
