Good beginning workbook

This is a good introductory workbook to Japanese. It makes it easy to learn some of the more common words and expressions. It also explains some of the nuances of the languages, such as formal more polite vs. casual forms of the same phrase. If you are traveling to Japan, I would recommend getting a Japanese dictionary to bring with you on your trip. It does not try to teach Kanji or other types of Japanese writing, so if that is what you need, this would not be a good choice for you.
