Born in Ann Arbor, she grew up in Ypsilanti. She attended Ypsilanti High School and Washtenaw Community College. Her church is St. Mary's Baptist Church. She loves to sing and play the piano. Brooks' writing has been recognized in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Contest and in the Tunnel Contest.
