Moderate constructivism provides the basis for inquiry-based learning. In this approach, learners construct their own knowledge through active engagement with the subject matter, for example by independently planning and carrying out an experiment. It is beneficial for the teacher to identify the pupils' preconceptions on a topic so that these ideas can be built upon and further developed. Particularly with the complex topic of photosynthesis, there appear to be a multitude of misconceptions that are developed in childhood and are often not subsequently revised. For this study, a lesson was developed that is based on inquiry-based approaches and the children's everyday conceptions. The study was conducted using concept cartoons, concept maps and classroom observation in a class at a special needs school. Through the lessons on photosynthesis, every child was able to expand their understanding of plant growth. Only a few children demonstrated lasting retention of the newly acquired knowledge. For the others, a change in their understanding can be observed.
