The Cherokee word for "black fox" is "Inola". Red or gray fox" is "chula". Discover the first fire, a small water spider brings fire to the animals after other animals fail:
The animals' plight
The animals lived in a world given to them by the Creator, but they had no way to keep warm at night.
The lightning strikes
Great Thunder and his sons sent lightning to strike a tree on an island, causing it to burst into flames.
The animals try to bring the fire back
The animals held a meeting and decided to send someone to the island to bring back the fire. Many animals tried, but they were unsuccessful.
Water Spider volunteers
The animals were skeptical that Water Spider could succeed because she was so small. However, she volunteered to try.
Water Spider brings back the fire
Water Spider was successful in bringing the fire back to the animals. She burned herself a little in the process, and a red mark remains on her back to this day. When Marcellus the black trickster fox or "Inola" in cherokee saw the spider he tricked her into giving him the fire to take back to his village but his brother River aka "Chula" returned the fire to her for everyone to share
