In previous years, the concept of sustainable development has been more difficult to define. Not only because the concept is anachronistic, but also because defining it requires grappling with the relativity of time and-what is even more challenging-with the rules governing its consistency. Present-day generations have come and gone, while future generations are becoming the present, all the while building on the legacy of the past so as not to jeopardize the future's prospects. There are risks, as with any change, but the greatest risk is to change nothing and to continue "as before." The "doomsday" view of sustainable development is, in this regard, a real hindrance. It reinforces a negative idea-that we must pursue it "because we have no choice"-when in fact sustainable development is a wonderful adventure. Many view change as a deterioration in living conditions and the imposition of new constraints; on the contrary, we must see it as an opportunity to build on a sounder foundation. The generations of the 21st century have a responsibility to redefine a "roadmap."
