great book for writers, writing teachers, students

Engaging collection of interviews with a broad range of writers talking about their work, their inspiration, technique, philosophical musings, practical advice. Particularly appreciated is the fact that Kingsbury includes so many interesting writers, not just the same old good ol' boy mafia of Faulkner and Barry Hannah wannabes. This book takes the "expanded canon" view of "INVITED GUEST,An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Southern Poetry" and applies it to an eclectic mix of contemporary Southern fiction writers, an essayist,a couple of poets,etc. I'm hoping for a volume 2.

Southern writers illuminated

Pam Kingsbury is a gifted interviewer and manages to gather a lot of information from her subjects in just a few pages. Here is a collection of twenty-six interviews with Southern writers. They talk about their influences, techniques, goals, successes and failures, and their experiences with publishing and promoting their works. The interviewees include Rick Bragg, Larry Brown, Mary Ward Brown, Kelly Cherry, Patricia Foster, William Price Fox, H.E. Francis, Vanessa Davis Griggs, Tim Gautreaux, Carolyn Haines, Joy Harjo, Melinda Haynes, Roy Hoffman, Sheri Joseph, Catherine Landis, Jill McCorkle, Jackson Tippett McCrae, Joan Medlicott, Barbara Robinette Moss, Ron Rash, Jeanne Ray, Michelle Richmond, Jeff Sharlet, Kay Sloan, Miller Williams, and Jan Willis.
