Born in the western Victorian town of Hamilton, Archie Adams, from early youth, displays ability in horsemanship and an aptitude for arithmetic. He is encouraged to pursue his mathematical prowess by attending classes at the Mechanics Institute and later the Ballarat School of Mines. While delivering a mine payroll, in the employ of the Bank of Victoria, his best friend is shot during a holdup. A pledge to his dying friend compels Archie to pursue the murderer to Aden, then to South Africa where war is brewing between the British and the Zulu King Cetshwayo. His riding and martial skills do not go unnoticed and Archie is offered a commission in the Frontier Light Horse, led by the redoubtable Col. Henry Redvers Buller.
