1. RESEARCH CONTEXT AND ORGANISATION OF STUDY For years banks and financial institutions were the main players in resource mobilization, for savings as well as for allocations, in the Indian economy. Due to the pressure of globalization and the slow growth of the economy, the process of economic liberalization and deregulation was initiated in the year 1980 but gained momentum in 1992. It resulted in the expansion and growth of the Indian capital market, both at the primary and secondary segments level. There was a clear shift away from banks and other financial institutions toward equity participation.
