Inhale (The Day of Man)

A bustling city street hummed along as it always had until the piercing light penetrated its normalcy. Silence and light engulfed them. The chaos, both inside and outside, ceased. Then came His voice. It rushed over and around and through. Knees buckled gladly. Heads bowed gratefully. Tears of joy flowed freely. When He stopped speaking and drew away, the light became pale and the air frail. Jillian stood facing the empty throne wondering. Her mother stood beside her. They embraced, unconcerned that they had lived hundreds of miles apart on Earth. Nor were they concerned by the crowd of millions now dispersing on every side of them. He had eliminated fear. There was, however, an absence. Erick...where was her brother? Humans are strangely habitual creatures. Jillian arrived at the space station stunned like all the rest. She embraced her new home with excitement and hope. Under the reign of the King of Kings, anything was possible. Still, even a space station requires tedious work. She settled into a night job with no supervision and no brain power required. She would have glided through that existence much as she had her life on Earth if it had not been for that one sound bite, which she was never meant to hear. Erick was not only alive but actively working for the enemy! The EVs are a volunteer-only unit. Most never return from their missions to Earth. Those that do return are changed. Jillian spent weeks trying to convince the powers that be that she could help, that she needed to be an EV. Jillian knew that even if she never saw Erick on Earth, she had to do for others what she desperately hoped was being done for him. The Great Commission continued, spreading the Gospel was the last hope for those still on Earth. It took an Angels' intervention and a threat of brimstone and hellfire, but finally, she was admitted to that elite and honored group. For better or for worse, she was now committed to the eternal destiny of every human still on Earth. She prayed her toil and possibly her life, could save at least one.
