This book focuses on parenting styles and adolescent autonomy and self-esteem. It explains how different rearing styles influence adolescent autonomy and self-esteem: this is the ability of the adolescent to arrive at an independent decision and carry through on it, and being more capable and competent with daily tasks respectively. It further shows that parenting can be classified broadly as demandingness or responsiveness. There are some adolescents who are in good relationship with their parents and some who are not. In any parenting, adolescents need lots of loving guidance, firm boundaries with plenty of age-appropriate discussions to enhance their self-esteem, autonomy, as well as independence and openness. This book also reveals that parenting styles, adolescent age level, gender and class level do influence the development of both autonomy and self-esteem. However, it is true that no single parenting style can bring about autonomy and self-esteem development.
