Naturally, he was drawn to the Metropolitan Transit Authority's recycling project, where they retired 2,500 subway cars into the ocean to help rebuild the underwater reefs. The unbelievable photographs were captured moments before the mass transit vessels sunk beneath the waves. These subway cars and other man-made structures have a surprising beauty that Mallon teases out, allowing viewers to reflect on how functional engineering can be so neatly tied to design.
