Industrial Wastewater Treatment

The effects of pollution from industries on the receiving environment are manifold and depend on the type of pollutant and concentration: ranges from aesthetic quality reduction to toxic metal bioaccumulation that in the long run is suspected of causing cancer. Pollutants released from tannery are rich in carcinogenic chromium (VI). These industries should have to handle toxic pollutants either by recycling valuable components back to production processes, by altering it in to non toxic form or by safely damping it in an engineered landfill. The treatment of chrome can be carried out by applying physical, chemical or biological unit processes. In this work three different waste treatment processes were applied, Low cost Biosorption using Eucalyptus tree bark, Coffee husk and saw dust, Precipitation process using leftover cement dust and finally by Membrane separation technology: The state of the art technology. The engineering optimization process employs statistical design tools to limit the number of runs, to establish the combination of parameters for each experimental run and to pinpoint optimum treatment efficiency whereby best process operating variables are attained
