Bipan Chandra has provided a wealth of facts relating to the Indian Independence movement, making it an excellent ready reference for each of the milestones - The peasant uprisings, the Civil Disobedience Movement, the Salt March, the Quit India Movement etc are discussed in separate chapters in a way so as to provide most of the relevant facts - dates, names, places, etc. - while keeping a thread running through the narrative. Where this book is a trifle disappointing is in its treatment of communalism and the role of the Indian National Congress. Communalism has been squarely blamed on the British, while the failures of the Comgress have been mentioned only in passing and in a vaguely apologist tone, as a result of which the defining event of the subcontinent's history - Partition - is not analysed in the detail I would have liked. However, it has been extremely well researched, and has a useful chapterwise bibliography, making it very useful for students as well as those interested in reading up about Indian independence
