India's Gluten Shield was brought to life as a teaching tool to help the original author (Rosaura Salazar) explain Celiac Disease to her daughter (India) and her daughter's closest friends. Having been diagnosed at a very young age, India found it difficult to differentiate between the foods that made her sick, and the foods she needed to grow healthy and strong. Rosaura (with the help of her family and friends) created this concept to not only educate her daughter on Celiac Disease, but to help other children not struggling with dietary restrictions understand why some individuals need to eat food that may be considered "different." Indeed as Rosaura discovered in raising India (and as India discovers in her adventures) it is only through shared learning and understanding that all children can arrive to a place where they feel accepted.
