Fiction set in Ozark Mountains in 1891. At the age of twelve Rick Weber lost both parents in a typhoid fever epidemic. As his father had instructed him before his death, he continued to live on the Ozark Mountain family farm --- alone. Ozark Mountain boys grow up fast, and at the age of nineteen in 1891 he was fully accepted as a man among the other men of the hills and streams. His father, a fiercely independent man, had warned Rick not to compromise his independence. It was only after he became a man that his independence was seriously challenged by a set of circumstances that include outlaws and an especially alluring and capable young woman.
