A Young Woman's First Poetry Book

I am exceptionally fond of this book, as it was what introduced me to my love of poetry.I was given my copy by my mother, a self commited feminist of the 60-70's, and who felt that I would benefit by reading said collection.I have loved it since the day I first opened it, and I do till this day! I carry around my copy everywhere, quoting often if the situation arises!I think one of the most appealing poems is and "The truce between the sexes", as they reflect the bitterness which is left after years of what is essentially a loveless relationship, and feelings that many women can relate to. Another amazing poem, is "First Love" - which comments on that bond between mother and daughter. The way in which the author comments on this band, feels so blatently real, that it is impossible to forget. I should also mention my own mother favourite, due to the similarity of opinion. "Woman Enough" - Erica Jon, is an amazing example of how woman has progressed through time, and how although these advances have been made, it is impossible not to comtemplate those woman in the past, who had no freedom of expression. The poem itself identifies with the woman who is, in a way, allowed to have a soul. Another poem, which struck a note is "To my Apolitical Sisters". Within this poem, there is such anger and power expressed, at the way women have been treat at the hands of men. Although it is verging on the inhumane, it is literally fills you with an urge to join with the ranks of women who still put up with maljustice and humiliating inequality due to men.The way in which the poems have been compiled is excellent, and demonstrating the range of emotions which can be expressed in a womans poetry. If you buy only one collection of women's poetry ever again, CHOOSE THIS BOOK. You won't regret it! I promise!
