A love story spanning two wars, The Past Indefinite follows Maria, a young woman from a wealthy Greek family of jewelers from Smyrna, Turkey through the stormy upsets of her life. In the 1920s, her family is forced to flee its homeland and life of cosmopolitan comfort, as the city burns during the Asia Minor Catastrophe. With her, Maria carries a deep and dark secret she cannot reveal to anyone. Searching for a new home, Maria's family, along with her childhood friend Pavlos, stay in the refugee camps of Athens for a while and then decide to relocate to Cairo, Egypt. Along the way Maria marries Pavlos. The couple struggles to make a life for themselves in the new metropolis and Maria gives birth to Constantinos and Aspasia. Constantinos is called to go off and fight at El Alamein in WWII when he comes of age. In an ironic twist of fate, Maria's secret comes to the surface. Will Maria ultimately have the strength to reveal the dark secret she was hiding so well all these years she spent battling with the do's and don'ts of life? Significant historical events are the backdrop to Maria's story, whose past indefinite gradually becomes definite.
