Ella constantly dreads social interactions, public speaking, and the thoughts of being surpassed by her elder sister Rose. After failing at a speech contest in school; she ends up in hospital after soaking near a water hose in rain, and then found by her new neighbor Ben. Ella and Ben begin to share more than the feelings of being alienated by their families; their love for books, dreams, and faraway lands leave them more than just being friends.Apart from the stranger Ben who suddenly fills Ella's life, there is Sister Roberta who returns to school to offer help and support to overcome Ella's weaknesses in school. Ella sees the timid person in the mirror, as described by Sister Roberta, and through the eyes of Ben to decide on her true self. When Ben's father remarries, he is driven by contempt but will it affect his relationship with Ella?
