Premise Nora Callahan, a fifth-year PhD student in English Literature, accidentally discovers a hatbox in a university archive containing unpublished love letters by Constance Wren-the Victorian poet who is the subject of her dissertation. She is caught handling them without gloves (in violation of all preservation protocols) by Professor Gabriel Ashworth, a stern, exacting academic and a widower with a teenage daughter, Sam. Development As they work together every evening to authenticate the letters, an attraction develops between them that blossoms into a clandestine affair-complicated by the fact that Gabriel sits on Nora's dissertation committee. They spend months keeping their relationship secret until an anonymous email triggers a university disciplinary inquiry. It is later revealed that the person who reported them was Lillian Voss, a colleague with a painful history involving Gabriel. Crisis and Resolution Gabriel resigns from the committee to protect Nora's PhD; he nonetheless receives a formal sanction (a two-year ban on supervising doctoral students). Nora graduates with honors, the discovery of the letters becomes an international media sensation, and the couple finally goes public with their relationship. They marry, have a daughter (Eleanor), and build a blended family with Sam. Long Arc The novel follows the couple over the course of decades-Nora's academic career (books, a professorship), Gabriel's retirement, and the reconciliation with Lillian-leading up to the deaths of both in old age. Constance Wren remains a constant presence in the background; her unrequited love for a man already betrothed to another serves as a tragic counterpoint to the protagonists' happy ending.
