I am the last of eight descending from Glen Cove, New York. As the baby of the family, I was privileged with experiences my siblings were not, such as private schools, ballet, and instrument lessons. However, being a black child out of a small percentage of 'minorities' attending these schools, early in education, I was labeled "deliberate" in reading skills and English comprehension. This was a slower group considered to have poor assimilation of English grammar and written concepts. I carried this label well into my adult life, thinking I would never be a noteworthy writer. My breakthrough came when I went back to college for my Bachelor's degree in Nursing at age 53. Several papers received Excellence Awards for content, ease of reading, and fulfillment of the rubric. With one award, I thought it might be a fluke; after several, I began to trust not only the graders' judgements but my own talent. So when I became inspired to write this book, I enjoyed the process and let it flow. The inspiration for In the Mangroves came after a mindset course designed to help business owners discover "the event" which caused negative beliefs which block success. For me, it was that "Deliberate" label I received in the third grade which I allowed to sabotage several opportunities for advancement and success in my life. "No more!" I say. Never again will I allow a stranger to define my abilities and worth. I pray this book helps you reclaim your worth and fosters resilience!
