My first debt of gratitude is to Mr R Pulle whose ambition was to have a souvenir from the war. He remembered that the lead car in the liberation of his village was a Humber Heavy armoured car. The car was hit by a Panzerfaust and caught fire. During the cleanup of the war detritus, its remains were dumped in the woods behind an attractive thatched house called Klein Iwalt. On the 15th August 1945, the car remained in the woods so Mr R Pulle and his son Frederik Pulle decided to liberate the gun. Off they went one day with a wheelbarrow, toolbox and a length of rope and dismantled the gun from the turret. They placed the gun in the wheelbarrow and with the father pulling and the son pushing they got it home.

My second debt of gratitude is to the person, of whom I only know his nom de plume, is "Confuzzled". To this person I remain deeply thankful for without his help whilst history would still be there I would not have been able to follow in the Footsteps of a Polar Bear. He, for I assume that it was a he, provided that all-important missing link that enabled me to find Paul Sanders from Loenen, and Sid Godfrey, a Polar Bear, from Arundel in West Sussex. They helped to open up my world to so many more wonderful and helpful people that in turn have opened up the hidden story of my Father's life. It means so much more to me and also to his grandchildren than just a few snapshots of his experiences that he divulged.

The events in this story are as accurate as the information that I have uncovered and have been joined together with my imagination knowing my father as I did.

Now come with me and follow in the footsteps of a Polar Bear on my journey of discovery.
