John Doe has packed up Denise, his wife, riddled with Alzheimer's disease, and settled in a formerly abandoned mansion-style farmhouse in upstate New York. His stated intention is to keep bees, but deep in winter, he is hiding his rage and depression not only from the friends who do not visit, but from the whole world. He has hidden away successfully from everyone, that is, except for the previous owners of the house, both living and dead. The living and the ghosts play out a constant nightmare of intrusion and disruption for John and Denise, whom he keeps close in her own state of half living, half spirit world. But, when a pretty younger neighbor from across the fields of frostbitten corn stubble introduces herself, a spark is ignited that may lead to a path out of the misery that consumes him. If only he could let go of the spirit that has kept him alive and partly sane until now. Gradually, as old feelings of desire arise, John struggles to reconcile his former passions for his wife, and his new feelings of desire for the younger woman. She begins to suspect the hidden presence of Denise, even while Denise's spirit eggs him forward to sample the forbidden fruits of another woman.
