In The Clouds

By Charles Egbert Craddock

In the clouds begins in the remote highlands where two isolated herders endure the harsh beauty and eerie stillness of their wilderness surroundings. As they carry out their repetitive work, the vast landscape mirrors their emotional solitude, occasionally broken by playful tension and rumors of unseen presences. The narrative draws attention to the relationship between the two men, shaped by the silence of the mountains and their opposing temperaments one reflective, the other restless. Looming over their world is Thunderhead, a peak shrouded in legend, where whispers of a spectral figure known as the Herder from Thunderhead unsettle the balance of their daily life. These local tales blend with real fears, as strange occurrences begin to hint that the supernatural may not be mere superstition. As their lives unravel under pressure from the environment and their own growing unease, the mountain setting deepens in mystery and meaning. The opening offers a quiet but intense portrayal of isolation, companionship, and the invisible forces both human and otherworldly that influence a fragile sense of reality.
