In 1824, young William Graves leaves his family farm to go west. In St. Louis, he meets the mountain man, Jedediah Black. After an altercation forces them to leave the city, the pair travel west into the mountains. Their travels are beset by bandits, hostile Indians and deadly animals. His capture at the hands of a Blackfoot raiding party seems to seal his fate. But it is his capture that ultimately introduces him to a young Flathead woman named Dancing Fawn. William left his family's farm to search for freedom, but can he find it in a wilderness that seems to want to kill him and his loved ones?
