Set in the mid-1920s, a young Jewish community seeks new opportunities due to rising hostility in their settlement in Southeast Asia. The settlement faces severe challenges, including discrimination, violence, and economic exploitation. A young woman, Jael, meets Ragnar, a compassionate Norwegian traveler who helps her, symbolizing hope amidst adversity. After an elder is attacked, the community decides to leave urgently. With the help of a sympathetic outsider, they secure passage aboard a ship captained by Ronald Henry, embarking on a journey to Polynesia in search of a safer home.

The journey includes tense moments, such as an encounter with a pirate ship, which the settlers cleverly outwit using an unconventional strategy. Upon arrival at the island of Valutu, they find a promising new home with resources like coconut palms and fresh water. They name their settlement "Echo" due to the natural acoustics of the island, which mirrors their calls. Over time, the settlement thrives, growing in population and establishing a successful copra and fishing industry, despite the lingering dangers of the region.
