In Praise of Difference

In Praise of Difference offers a fascinating insight into the world of autism. So often characterised by anxiety and seemingly insurmountable challenges for child and parents, this book breaks this negative mould. It is a celebration of the achievements of inspirational teachers, support assistants, parents and mostly of course the children introduced during the text. It is full of insight and first hand experiences from a passionate professional. The author, Margaret Filley, had five fulfilling years as head teacher of a primary school in Berkshire. During this time Margaret became more and more interested in the children not conforming to expected learning and behaviour patterns. Bonding with these children she realised her role was not that of 'teacher' but as motivator - to invite and inspire every child in her school to learn and reach their full educational potential. Instead of moving on to administration Margaret's professional journey then took a very different path. She became teacher in charge of a much respected Unit for children with developmental delays in language. This had been the first such Unit in the country and was considered a centre of excellence. Attached to a large junior school in Portsmouth, it provided an interesting and stimulating educational background for children with language and learning difficulties. It was in this setting that Margaret first worked with children diagnosed as autistic - and her professional learning journey accelerated with the discoveries, personal skill development and knowledge she acquired during three years working alongside colleagues who were Speech and Language Therapists. These children were so individual, so different, that individual learning programmes were essential.During this time Margaret achieved an Advanced Diploma Special Needs and an MA Ed focusing on the assessment of learning in autistic children. The book includes many of her amazing experiences from this time, with in fact two of the children in the Unit not only the subjects for her Master's degree but also featuring as examples shared in 'In Praise of Difference'.Becoming Head teacher of a residential autistic special school was the most wonderful experience in the author's career. For five years Margaret became champion of students, their parents and of course the staff at the school. No two days were either alike or predictable. The book is filled with discoveries made and successes achieved. There are passages in this book that will stop you in your tracks. Written from the heart it chronicles and celebrates autism in a new and positive way. It aims to totally change the way people with autism are perceived and offers opportunity for personal reflection on what educational experiences we should provide and how we might educate these young people to enable them to fulfil their potential and enjoy full access to the busy world around them. For Margaret working with young people diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder has been a journey of discovery and a privilege.Join us to laud and praise the difference which is autism
