"In Open Fields" was written in the early 1980's, but was never published until now. It is a mixture of fact and fiction, based on the story of the emigration of the Fitzherbert family from Ireland to Uruguay, in the second half of the 19th century, and all their trials in establishing and running a large farm in a faraway and foreign country. It also incorporates some interesting historical information about Uruguay in those days, when political and civil strife were quite common, and how it affected their lives on the farm. It also depicts some clear contrasts, apart from the language difference, between British and local Uruguayan cultures.
