The editor has written a substantial Introduction that provides students with a historical and contextual overview, from In Memoriam's genesis to its publication and reception. The text of the poem is again that of the Eversley Edition of Tennyson's Works, published in 1901-8; it is accompanied by explanatory annotations. "Criticism" collects thirteen essays -- seven new to the Second Edition -- that analyze the history and structure of the poem as well as present different readings of this seminal work. New contributors include Christopher Ricks, Edgar Finley Shannon, Jr., Timothy Peltason, Jeff Nunokawa, W. David Shaw, and Sarah Gates. A great Writer

When I first began to read this book, it was in my Senior English class. At first I thought it would be some dumb poem. But as we read I became so enthralled I couldn't put it down. Alfred Tennyson wrote with such good emotion and truth I felt I knew what he was feeling. He describes so many emotions that most of us feel, and he did it so well. This is a very wonderful book! And although I have only read it once, that is all it took for me to know that it has become one of my favorite.
