Well before I arrived in Korea, I was fascinated by the fast pace of change that took this country from the ashes of war to the top of all relevant development indicators. My admiration for Korea increased even more when in the streets, the hills, the bays or the islands, I found how the speedy rise in standards of living did not change Koreans' religious tolerance, perfectionism, openness, community involvement, hunger for learning and their thirst for self-improvement. My photographs thus attempt to document the tension between stillness and change created by modernity, disrupting traditions, architectural styles, patterns of behavior, and the pace of people's lives. To this end, I always have at hand one of my cameras, taking photos on my way to or from work, taking a stroll after dinner, riding my bike or hiking, and of course on the many official trips I was invited to outside of Seoul. Master Younghoon Kwaak, former Foreign Minister Park Jin and KT Kim in Seoul, Marianne de Tolentino and Freddy Ginebra in Santo Domingo, were kind enough to write commentaries inserted in English and Spanish in the present publication. If the overall balance of my pictures is optimist, it is because of the admiration I feel for the land of the morning calm, a country that has done so much in so little time thanks to the sacrifice and hard work of so many anonymous heroes.
