I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Boener, a former youthful fighter pilot with the German Air Force, in 1969 while he was serving as a test pilot with Beech Aircraft. Because of an oversight in scheduling, Mr. Boener was called from his test pilot duties to check me out in a King Air B-90. It became instantly obvious to me that Mr. Boener was not only a highly experienced pilot, but a natural teacher as well (at that time I was a former school teacher and, as a profession pilot, with over 16,000 flying hours. I had also served the CAA/FAA as a designated pilot examiner for the past fourteen years). In his book, Mr. Boener tells about his early days as a German youth, his love of flying, and how he became caught up in the German government turning to youths to serve the military during the concluding days of the war. As a teenager, Mr. Boener flew high permormance German fighter aircraft, including the first jets, in combat againts Allied aircraft.Becoming disinchanted with Hitler, he became branded as a traitor and narrowly escaped with his life before reaching the Allied front. With the ending of the war, Mr. Boener came to the United States where he served as in various capacities as a professional pilot as well as in aircraft sales. In his latter days he was associated with Bill Lear in Lear's ill-fated Learfan program. For any reader that has an interest in fighter aircraft and their pilots of the World Ward II period, this is a must book. After all the death-defying experiences Mr. Boener faced as a youthful German fighter pilot, he died at a much too early age of non-aviation related causes.
