In the tiny, almost empty town of Westholme, Louisiana, there are five people struggling to survive under a blue sun. First is Valda James, the fierce, tough girl who ran away every chance she got. Escorted home from Detroit by the police only a week before the sun changed, she now lives with her eyes on the horizon and spends her time in preparation for the journey back. Her best friend, Lala Reynolds, doesn't bother himself with much beyond the area of his town and the three kids he's taken in.
