Judith Milling's IN AND AROUND LONDON FOR KIDS is exactly what the title promises: a collection of places kids will like or love, with realistic explanations of which attractions are likely to be favorites, and why. Each attraction is described, but the really special usefulness of this book lies in the clear directions, information on eating places and gift shops (always a critical factor with children), as well as restroom facilities and ease of access for pushchairs. This information is useful for anyone, regardless of age. After three visits to London, each over a month long, I could evaluate her comments on many of the attractions, and found her entries accurate and entertaining. Based on the book, several sites are marked for our next trip. Ms. Milling has included a number of attractions not found in the run-of-the-mill "slick" guides. The book is not "glitzy," and has no maps or pictures, but doesn't really need them. (A few pictures might be nice for children to see before a visit.) The largest drawback, howeever, is the 1998 copyright date, reprinted in 1999. This book deserves to be updated! It does a job many of the more expensively-produced illustrated guides does not.
