Silymarin is a complex mixture extracted from the seeds and fruits of Silybum marianum. It has been widely used for the treatment of liver disorders. It was also found to be effective against certain cancers, such as breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Silymarin absorption rate levels range between 20 and 50%. This poor bioavailability may be due to poor solubility, degradation by gastric fluid or its poor enteral absorption. Considering these limitations, new drug delivery systems were developed in order to increase its solubility and oral absorption. Nanoemulsion offers numerous advantages over other drug delivery systems such as higher solubilization ability, rapid onset of action, and extended shelf life. The present study emphasizes the formulation and evaluation of silymarin loaded nanoemulsion aiming at enhancing its solubilization and oral bioavailability.
