Impact of agricultural activity on groundwater quality

In this study, we first provide a general overview of the Tafna watershed, focusing in particular on the Hennaya and Maghnia areas. These areas are recognized as citrus-growing regions with high agricultural potential, where intensive farming practices expose groundwater to pollution risks. This hypothesis has been confirmed by water analyses revealing the presence of nitrates and ammonium exceeding the standards for human consumption water quality. The use of a decision-making tool is therefore essential. With this in mind, we were able to develop a map of intrinsic vulnerability to aquifer pollution using the GOD assessment method. This method identifies three classes of vulnerability: moderate, high, and extreme. This map, along with the results of the qualitative characterization of the aquifer and the study of the various sources of pollution, could be used in regional planning and the establishment of a water quality monitoring network.
