Immigrants: A Bronx Trilogy

The Immigrants novel is a spellbinding semi-fictional trilogy that describes the life, tribulations and final triumph of a young emigrant family in the United StatesIn the first volume, titled the Forefather, Ernest Dembinsky arrives to America and rents a small living space in a Bronx rooming house operated by a Baptist family. Through and with the help of the Baptists he slowly becomes familiar with his new surroundings and becomes a religious man. He makes acquaintances with Mariska, who is a divorced woman of the same age and they fall in love. Mariska also had her own misfortunes and troubles, but the two of them together through their diligent work and thrifty lifestyle slowly establish themselves and succeed.Ernest becomes a consulting engineer, Mariska opens up and runs a sandwich store chain and they get married. Later Ernest becomes the priest at the Hungarian Baptist Church and they have two children. By the end of the first volume Ernest is an extremely wealthy man and the children grow up. In the second volume, titled The Second Generation, Thomas, Ernest's son, following his father advice moves to Budapest with his young girlfriend, Isabel, where he take advantage of the privatization process, and also becomes very rich on his own merit. In the final volume, titled Before the Curtain Falls, our main protagonist travels to Budapest, to search out his past, find his soul and to meet with his old friends and classmates. He is different from our Ernest whom we had met so far, who piled money and fortune on money and fortune and became an unrealistic success overseas. This Ernest in the Third Book is trying to be a better, a more humble and remorseful man. For this trip, he will try to be what he is, an aging expatriate at best, and he will see things the way he sees them and not through some politically correct constriction filter that we call the compliance factor.
