It is an ancient market town which was the county town of Huntingdonshire, England's second smallest county, until becoming part of Cambridgeshire in 1974. It was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, and the Poet William Cowper lived here. William Cobbett wrote in the early nineteenth century that 'Huntingdon is a very clean and nice place, contains many elegant houses'.
