Illustrations for Mandeville's Travels: A facsimile of the complete manuscript

A complete illuminated manuscript in 32 full page color plates The Travels of Sir John Mandeville is an autobiographical account of the writer's supposed voyages and adventures in countries of the near and far east. It is generally accepted that Mandeville is a nom de plume, and various theories exist as to the author's true identity. The work, believed to have first appeared in Anglo-Norman French c. 1357, enjoyed great popularity in many languages. In spite of its unreliability and the often fantastical nature of the travels it describes, it was even used as a work of reference, by Christopher Columbus among others. The present manuscript is a series of full-page miniatures based on the Czech translation of the Voyage by Vavrinec of Brezov?, written c. 1410. It is currently held by the British Library, London.
