Although this is, to a certain extent, a matter of personal preference, I find Rainbird's book to be the most satisfying introduction to wine appreciation. It covers the nature of wine, how and where to buy it, how to serve it, and how to keep it until it is ready to be served. The largest section is devoted to the various parts of the world in which wine is produced. Some of the specific vintage advice will be dated (the book was published in 1983), but the author's feel for the subject has never been matched, at least in my experience. You can use what you learn from him as the basis for more advanced study, if you are so inclined.
