Illusions is a story of a young teenage girl named Becky, growing up in a small town in the eastern part of the United States in the late nineteen-nineties. Too absorbed in her own little world, buried in her books and on the quiet side, most at her school never even seem to notice her. Occasionally, seeing her mom with a few bruises, she never even questions the illusion that her mom is just clumsy. Then, one day, she sees her dad hitting her mom and her world begins to change forever. Trying to get a grasp on what is happening and why her mom is covering it up and apologizing, she searches for someone to help. Then one night, her mom comes to her, saying she is leaving. Barely involved in the lives of her much younger siblings, suddenly, she is thrown into a world of needing to care for them and dealing with so much unknown.
