In Vu Son village, Ha Nam province, 1914. Like other villages in the mountains, most of the people lived by hunting, and every spring, when the old year passed and the new year came, they held a ceremony to worship heaven, to give thanks for bringing them a successful and prosperous harvest year. The ceremony was usually solemn, and the fun often reached its peak when the masquerade ball ended. Lac Mai had heard and known about this story for a long time, but unfortunately, her house was too far away from that village. Besides, her mother was very strict, so Mai had no chance to attend. This year, thanks to the help of her cousin Hung Dat, the two of them found an excuse to deceive their family, took a donkey cart, and traveled all day to get here, to broaden their horizons. On the wide lawn outside the village, a young man was raising his head and blowing a trumpet as a signal. The young girls in the village, with trays of wine and meat in their hands, were busily arranging food and drinks on the long table. People were helping the elderly and holding children, rushing in from all directions, laughing and talking loudly. Everyone seemed happy and excited, waiting for the opening ceremony. Lac Mai was panting and trying to climb up to the highest rock on the edge of the yard. Standing here, she could look down and see everything. The scene in front of her made Mai's eyes light up.
