Florence, summer 1963. Inspector Bordelli is one of the few detectives left in the deserted city. He spends his days on routine work and his nights tormented by the heat and mosquitoes. With the help... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Commissario Bordelli is a good character, one you feel like you know well, from the start. I've read four of these now and have ordered a fifth. Full disclosure: I lived in Tuscany for a couple years 30 years ago, so I like the setting. I also look for mild-mannered mysteries with good characters. This has that.
Bordelli is not Brunetti (Donna Leon's rich 33 book series about Venice.) He's pretty much on his own, in every way, but he
is interesting enough to handle it. He handles life on a day to day basis, and the quotidian details put you there. The surrounding ensemble is a ragtag troupe of mostly former criminals, including a retired madam, a chef who learned world cuisine in various prisons, and a mostly-retired B&E man who helps with the sketchy parts.
Commissario Bordelli is a welcome addition to the genre, the stories all have nifty twists and turns, and even unresolved threads. Like I said, I've just ordered my fifth.
