After the death of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the ruling class of the Muromachi Shogunate began to falter, with frequent wars and rampant epidemics. After the death of his master, the monk Ken'ō, Ikkyu fell into confusion, wandering in search of salvation, but never finding a home.
