"And if they haven't died, then they're still alive today..." What an optimistic outlook on the future - may life go on forever. But when we leave the world of fairy tales behind, dying, death and grief become a real and painful experience in our own lives. People around us die. We will all die one day. As an educator, you have the opportunity to introduce children to this unavoidable topic as early as primary school, and can help them find their own ways of coping with loss - and, in the worst-case scenario, the onset of bereavement - together as a class community. However, dying, death and grief remain taboo subjects in society to this day, and in the event of an acute bereavement, teachers often feel helpless. For this reason, I have chosen the subject of 'dying, death and grief' as the basis for my thesis, as a guide and source of inspiration for dealing with bereavements and grieving children. No one can take away the pain of grief, but we can offer helpful support to those who are grieving. "...then they still live on today..." - in our memories, the deceased are immortal.
