If Indeed Death Be All

(i) I was in pursuit of death, Not because I loved it so, No, it was for an answer, I had sought long ago. It was to find the source, Of Life, Leisure and Fancy, And I knew that Death knew- Because he lives in all three (ii) Man's deceiving destiny is unfurled, While the heaven continues to pry, And rejoicing for this unreal world, To arrive uninvited - unlamented die Then why should we of bliss dream, Or hear the notes of lyres sung, When love and hate is but a team, Which punishes our young. And thus do dreams overshadow, Even the brightest star of our sky, And earthly gains only flow, To revolt against those who try. (iii) Where Hope will harm and Fear indebt, The Living to remember but the Dead to forget, And Life should die and Death be born, Within the waves of shameless scorn, Then mysteries of Grievance may be known, In honor sworn, but in courage shown. (iv) Within the bondage of our vision, Only what we wish to see, Or try to amend or evaluate, Permeates the veil of obscurity. For we may not pass judgment, Upon those yet unborn, Nor on those who lived before, To inconsequentially adorn.
