Lillian Crocker is a widow in her midseventies with one career-driven daughter, Charla, and one granddaughter, Courtney. She lives with a retired widowed schoolteacher, Cora, and a working nurse, Celia. Lillian bemoans the fact that her daughter spends no time with her. After one disturbing incident, she decides to put herself out there and force the daughter to take notice that she is still alive. Her escapades are frequently hilarious, sometimes dangerous, and sometimes bring tears to the eye. Ultimately, the roommates figure out that Charla has withheld an embarrassing secret from her mother, which has undermined her ability to have a close relationship.
