Can't Judge This Book Simply by the Cover...

"If I can do it, Anyone can" by Karl W. Marx at first glance is a outreach book for the troubled youth or convict looking for redemption that only Christianity can provide. While this book does have some spottings of scripture located in important elements and developments in the story, the small amount should not offend any secular or agnostic sensibilities. This book is at once, an entertaining and educational of how delinquent youth develop and to understand their points of view. The author, Marx, narrates the story of a boy only portrayed as "The Kid," where the boy's history and development of his troubled life came about. Like any good story, this author describes the boy's life that involved drugs, sex, and unadulterated violence. Marx also describes what is means to live in the South, the Rules of Engagement (ROE) of combat (if any), job descriptions of the true meaning of a pimp, and the infamous method to developing a 'rep' for a well-known bar bouncer. From life in the Navy to failed marriages, Marx takes the reader on a wild ride of drunken battles, misplaced attitudes towards women, and deception and corruption on all levels of the government. While many readers may enjoy this kind of reading, Marx does have an underlying message: This lifestyle is not to be honored, glorified, or otherwise looked up to. He describes that the glorification of such a lifestyle is simply a lack of true understanding AND that such a lifestyle can lead to one's death. On the upside, the Kid, as Marx describes it does some wonderful things and works very hard to overcome many challenges. The lesson here is no matter how bad one may think they are, it's never too late to fix it. Depression, loneliness, anger, frustration, and exploitation are just a few of the items the Kid must over come. As a martial art instructor, I find this book useful in dealing with even the most troubled youth that we, as instructors, may come into contact. Annually, my school works with Project Action, a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping 'at-risk' youth away from trouble by providing them with positive outlets for their energy and restlessness. While I know this does some help, I believe this book will help the instructor create a template that will help them understand things from a troubled youth perspective. I give this book my highest recommendation, and think the author takes a lot of courage to pony up some hard-to-tell truths about one's life. Don't judge this book by its cover, just buy it and read it...I look forward to reading Marx's next book, Martial Art Spirit. Sincerely, Corey Minatani Founder, Washington Research Council of Martial Arts 5th Degree Black Belt
